XL Woo Ring Expander fits the CGS XL Woo Ring.
Our Expander adds a second, upper, cooking grid to the XL Woo Ring or EGG’s ConvEGGtor®. It’s a straightforward way to add more capability and capacity to your cooks.
Cool Innovated Design
The key to the XL Expander is its two-part grid system. The back grid is a 20″ Half Grid and welded to the Expander frame. The front grid is a half 16″x20″ Oval Grid and removeable. Together, the grids almost form a full 20″ round grid. Go one or two grids, based on what and how much you are cooking.
You may wonder, why not slide the upper grid, like the Large EGG racks systems. We considered it, but owners of the XL Adjustable Rig Half Stone/Grid Bundle convinced us otherwise. They told us the 20″ Half Grid provides plenty of upper grilling space and see no reason to physically slide a grid. They also see no reason to work around a full grid that’s to big for most cooks. So, for typical grilling, we designed the Expander with a fixed 20″ Half Grid and positioned it along the backside for best access to the lower grid.
If and when you need to go big (BBQ cooks), just drop on the half 16×20 Grid. The Grid sits front side on the Expander and provides the added grid space for grilling or BBQing big.
Most folks find:
- When grilling, the fixed half grid provides plenty of shelf space above the XL cooking grid.
- When BBQing big, both grids on the Expander provide sufficient grid space for big briskets, multiple pork butts or several rack of ribs.
- For pizza, the Expander puts the pizza stone high in the dome – just where you want it!
- at 5″ tall, the Expander allows easy access to the XL grid below.
If that’s cool, this is really cool
Just like the Rig, the Expander can be set-up with a Half Stone under the 20″ Half Grid. All you need is the CGS’ XL Half Stone Hanger and one 18″ Half Ceramic Stone. If you contemplating the XL Woo, here’s another reason to have the Pair 18″ Half Stones.

The Hanger hangs on the Expander’s upper ring and sits under the 20″ Half Grid. The 18″ Half Stone sits on the Hanger and simply slides in and out from the front. And yes, you can take the Half Stone in and out during a cook – all you handle is the Half Stone. You’ll need hand protection for a hot stone.
How to set the Woo Expander
Adding the Expander is quick, just set it in place, pick the grid configuration half or full, and add the Hanger if going indirect during the cook. The Expander can be set 3 ways:
1. Directly on the XL Fire Ring: The XL grid underneath is optional. If you don’t have the XL Woo or Rig, going without the XL grid is a nice way to get height on your grilling cooks.
2. Atop the XL Woo Ring. If your Woo does not have handles, you’ll need to use the XL grid. If your Woo has handles, the XL grid is optional. Check out the Large EGG CI grid on Woo’s lower ring and Half Stone on Expander picture, this is a fantastic reverse sear set-up. Also, using the Expander atop the Woo is a great way to get the pizza stone up in the dome.
3. Atop EGG’s ConvEGGtor; The XL grid is required as it supports the Expander. Since the Expander just sit on the grid, you can easily rotate it during the long BBQ cooks. pizza up in the dome.
Comparing Expander to Adjustable Rig
So, how does the Expander compare to the XL Adjustable Rig. as they both work with the XL Woo Ring. There are some important differences between Expander and Rig.
- The Expander is not as versatile as the Rig.
- The Rig can be configured like the Expander – half, full grid with/without half stone.
- The Expander is fixed height. The Rig has multi-height capability.
- The Expander is one grid level. The Rig can be multiple grids at varied levels.
- The Expander has the option to hold one half stone, directly under the 20 Grid. The Rig can hold half or full Stones, again at varying heights and positions.
- The Expander requires the Woo Ring for BBQ cooks. The Rig does not need the Woo for BBQ cooks.
- The Rig can be set-up with the best single grid BBQ Cook, any kamado. The Expander does not have this capability. This capability alone, makes the Rig a better choice – it’s that good.
The XL Expander fits both our XL Woo Ring and Big Green EGG’s XL Eggspander (ConvEGGtor) Basket. Please note, you need to order the correct XL Expander, as they are not interchangeable.
- XL Woo Expander fits our XL Woo Ring. Works best on XL Woo w/ Handles.
- XL BGE Expander fits Big Green EGG’s XL EGGspander (ConvEGGtor) Basket.
You may wonder, why two? Simply, the XL Woo Ring and EGG Basket have slightly different dimensions that require different diameter base rings on the XL Expander. Both XL Expanders function the same.
