All About Deflector Plates for the Primo Large Oval
Deflector plates transform your Primo Large Oval into a versatile cooking machine. By blocking and redirecting heat, they create the indirect cooking setup needed for low & slow barbecue, or allow you to set up dual temperature zones for grilling flexibility.
Most Common Uses
- Two Plates on Racks: Full indirect setup for smoking and long barbecue cooks.
- One Plate on a Rack: Divided setup for two-zone grilling — one fire side, one indirect side.
Two Brand Options
We offer both Primo brand and Ceramic Grill Store (CGS) brand deflector plates:
- Both are “D” shaped and made to the same thickness.
- CGS plates provide a bit more coverage with longer straight edges and sharper corners.
- Packaging: Primo plates are sold as a pair. CGS plates are available individually or as a pair.
How Deflector Plates Work
Deflector plates sit between the fire and your food, blocking direct flames and distributing heat evenly.
- Smoking BBQ: Use a pair of plates for a full indirect setup.
- Two-Zone Grilling: Place one plate over the non-fire side to create direct and indirect zones.

Deflector Racks are Required
Deflector racks (sold separately) are necessary to hold the plates beneath the cooking grids. Each plate requires a rack:
- The rack drops inside the fire bowl, supporting the plate directly under the cooking grid.
- Setup is simple: place the rack, set the plate, then add your cooking grid in the up position.
Rack Options
We also offer Primo racks and Ceramic Grill Store racks:
- CGS racks provide more flexibility, easier lump access, and the ability to hold a wok.
- Because of our volume, we can bundle plates and racks at better prices and pass the savings on to you.
