Hang or invert it – get creative with double deflectors, grid, wok, or pizza stone.
Note: The XL Spider only fits the XL Big Green EGG. It does not fit other grills.
New for Summer 2025 – Handles Option
Get more out of your XL Big Green Egg with the CGS XL Spider—our stainless steel accessory ring designed to support grids, deflectors, woks, and pizza stones in multiple configurations. Whether you’re grilling hot and fast, smoking low and slow or baking pizza, the Spider gives you flexible, reliable placement options.
Two Ways to Set: Down or Up
Down creates a platform inside the fire ring. Up creates a platform above the fire ring, XL ConvEGGtor or grid.
Down Inside the Fire Ring
The Spider drops approximately 2-inches inside the fire ring, just about in the middle of the fire ring. It does not interfere with lump baskets. In the fire ring, the Spider holds a variety of deflectors, grids and woks.
Two Zones with XL Grid
Use one half-moon deflector under the XL grid to create two zone grilling, one side direct & the other indirect. Below left is EGG’s XL Half-Moon Deflector. Below right is CGS’ 18-Inch Half-Moon Deflector with XL grid.
Double Deflectors (Indirect) Set-Up:
The Spider holds half-moon deflectors to create the bottom assembly in a double deflector (indirect) set-up. For double deflector cooks, we recommend the Handle Spider, as it is best to manage the two deflector assemblies separately.
We found that lifting half-moon deflectors and XL ConvEGGtor together can be a very heavy lift, over 30 lbs. And note, this does not include additional items like a Spider, Expander, cooking grid, or food. So, be practical and go Handle Spider and manage the indirect assemblies separately.
- Bottom Assembly: XL Handle Spider with a pair of 16″ or 18″ half-moon deflectors. Some recommend a 15″ deflector. Given the inside diameter of the fire ring is 20 plus inches, 15 just seems too small: 16 can be the better option.
- Top Assembly: Your current BBQ setup, such as the XL ConvEGGtor, XL EGGspander, CGS XL Woo Expander or XL Adjustable Rig.
You’ll manage the top deflector as you normally would during a barbeque cook.
Note: A pair of 20-1/2″ XL Big Green EGG Half-Moon Deflectors (sku 121820) will not fit down inside the fire ring. They are too big.
Check out of Big Block 1/2″ Ceramic Spacers. Use them to protect your table surface from the hot deflectors.
Grill Closer to the fire
Adding a grid, griddle or grate is a great way to get closer to the fire for hot & fast searing or blackening. Pictured are two popular grid choices: On the left is EGG’s 18″ Large cast iron grid. On the right is CGS’ 20″ Stainless grid and Lump Reducing Ring. Note, the CGS 20” grid only fits the non-handle Spider.
Wok – Asian Style
The XL Spider can be set up or down to wok. Down puts the wok closer to the fire. Up makes it a little easier to manage the wok cook. 16” to 19” woks recommended. 16” is pictured. A CGS Lump Reducing Ring is a great way to manage the fire under the wok.
Elevate the Pizza Stone
The XL Spider can be inverted and paired with EGG’s ConvEGGtor, EGGspander or CGS’ XL Expander. It is an easy way to elevate and create separation between stones. Add CGS Ceramic Spacers for additional height.
On pizza stone size, we recommend a 16″-18″ pizza stone, 16″ stone pictured above. A bigger stone can complicate and hinder the pizza cook. Using a blocking stone under the pizza stone is dependent on dough thickness and cooking temperatures.
Spider Specs;
Original Spider: The ring OD is approximately 14.25″. The leg drop is approximately 2.25 inches.
